Motor Casco — is it worth it for an older car?
When Casco is a smart investment and how to pick the right package for your car’s value.
Unlike third-party liability, Motor Casco is voluntary and covers damage to your own vehicle — from an accident, theft, natural disaster or vandalism. The question most owners of older cars ask is whether the premium is worth it.
When Casco is worth it
- The car is financed through leasing or a loan — usually required by the lender.
- The car’s market value is still meaningful relative to the premium.
- You live in or often park in an area with a higher risk of theft or vandalism.
- You couldn’t comfortably cover a major repair out of pocket.
- You drive a lot — more mileage means more exposure to risk.
When you might skip it
- The car’s market value is low and the premium approaches that value.
- You have savings that would comfortably cover a repair or replacement.
- The car is used rarely and kept somewhere secure.
How to choose the right package
If you decide Casco makes sense, the deductible (your share of a claim) is the biggest lever on price — a higher deductible means a lower premium. Also check the insurer’s repair network and total-loss terms before you sign.
