Medical costs, lost luggage and cancelled flights — what you need to know before your next trip.

Travel insurance abroad: what it covers and when it’s mandatory

Travelling abroad carries risks that domestic health cover doesn’t reach outside Bulgaria. Travel insurance is relatively inexpensive but can save you thousands of leva in an emergency.

When it’s mandatory

  • When applying for a visa to countries outside Schengen and the EU — a minimum level of medical cover is usually required.
  • When travelling to countries with paid healthcare, such as the US, the UK or Thailand.
  • On package holidays, if it’s a condition of the tour operator.

What to check in the cover

  • The medical-expense cover limit — for long-haul destinations, a higher limit is the safer choice.
  • Whether emergency evacuation or repatriation is included.
  • Cover for lost or delayed luggage and trip cancellation.
  • Exclusions for higher-risk sports (skiing, diving), if you’re planning any.

Choose a policy based on your destination and the type of trip — a short EU getaway and a long-haul adventure call for different cover. Get in touch and we’ll match you with the right package.
